Transforming Retail: Worten's Journey to a Digital-First Omnichannel Marketplace

Worten, Portugal’s leading retailer, embarked on a digital transformation to become a digital-first, omnichannel marketplace. The challenges for worten.pt included redesigning the platform for a marketplace approach, designing for an integrated customer experience, and creating a system for faster development while ensuring UX consistency. We provided strategic input, conducted extensive user research and testing, and developed a tailor-made Design System, including frontend integration. The outcome was a completely revamped website and app, resulting in over 400,000 daily visits and a significant increase in the number of products available, from approximately 100,000 to millions.

The Challenge

Worten, Portugal’s foremost retailer of household appliances, consumer electronics, and entertainment products, has embraced a digital-first, omnichannel experience. With Worten.pt evolving into the country’s largest online marketplace, offering over 3 million products across 100 categories, a complete overhaul of the digital platform was necessary to match the company’s ambitions.

The challenges faced were:

1. Redesign for a marketplace approach: Adapting to the marketplace model required a revamped interface to accommodate the expanding range of product categories. The goal was to create an intuitive platform that showcased diverse offerings, ensuring easy navigation and discoverability while maintaining a cohesive user experience.

2. Designing for an omnichannel customer experience: Worten aimed to provide a seamless journey for customers across physical stores and online channels. The challenge was to create a cohesive design strategy that seamlessly integrated the offline and online worlds, ensuring consistency and continuity throughout the customer’s interactions.

3. Creating a system for faster development and deployment while ensuring UX consistency: Worten sought to enhance agility and speed to market. The challenge was to establish a robust system that facilitated accelerated development cycles, efficient deployment processes, and rigorous quality assurance measures, ensuring a harmonized user experience despite frequent updates.

By addressing these challenges, Worten aimed to transform its digital platform into a dynamic, customer-centric marketplace, bolstering customer satisfaction and solidifying its leadership in the digital retail landscape.
